January is National Blood Donor Month. Every two seconds in America, someone urgently needs blood. This need extends beyond unexpected emergencies like car crashes, encompassing a wide range of medical treatments such as cancer therapies, cardiovascular and orthopaedic surgeries, and organ and bone marrow transplants. Hospitals are the biggest users of blood, as 92-95% of blood is transfused into hospital inpatients.
Maintaining a constant supply of blood is vital for patient management and a problem storing and preserving blood during a power outage can have a catastrophic impact on our patients. The Joint Commission is the leader in standards development promoting quality and safety in health care organizations and sets national standards for excellence in patient care and safety.
