According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood, and more than 44,000 blood donations are needed nationwide every day. During the summer months of June, July and August, on average, about two fewer donors give blood at each American Red Cross blood drive than what hospital patients need. This could add up to more than 100,000 fewer donations during the summer.
