Envisioning a New Future of Nursing Excellence

This is the third in a series of six articles about Cooper’s Journey to Nursing Excellence.

The Cooper 2020 Professional Practice Model and the themes it should contain were a major part of the nursing retreat discussions that started in October 2019. This model is important because it provides a visual reminder of what the nursing collective is striving to achieve.

Cooper’s Professional Practice Model includes these key statements:

  • COLLABORATION: Promote inter-professional communication and coordination of patient/family-centered care.
  • ADVOCACY: Empower patients, caregivers, communities, and colleagues to ensure cultural competency and compassionate care.
  • RELIABILITY: Provide highly reliable delivery through dedication, insight, and a continuous commitment to quality improvement.
  • EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE: Integrate clinical expertise, scientific findings, and patient preferences to improve patient outcomes.
  • SERVICE TO EXCELLENCE: Foster self-directed practice through critical thinking and accountability. Commit to personal, clinical, and scholarly growth to optimize patient experience delivering on the Cooper promise: To Serve, To Heal, To Educate.

Taking the key statements with the acronym CARES, the following visual represents the 2020 Professional Practice Model – click here to view.

Cooper nurses reviewed and considered the work of three theorists in laying the foundation for Cooper’s nursing practice model, including:

  • Callista Roy: Adaptation Model of Nursing
  • Afaf Ibrahim Meleis; Transitions Theory
  • Kristen Swanson: Theory of Caring

The Shared Governance Model and the entire Journey to Excellence presentation will be posted in the next issue of Weekly Rounds.
