Cooper University Hospital Named a Best-In-State Hospital by Newsweek

Cooper University Hospital has been named one of America’s Best-In-State Hospitals 2025 by Newsweek – the only hospital in South Jersey among the top 10 in New Jersey. This mark of distinction was awarded following a rigorous vetting process in which Newsweek—in partnership with consumer data company Statista—performed analytics on patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes, safety, and quality of care at hospitals nationwide.

“At Cooper, we continually strive for excellence, and this honor is a testament to Cooper’s unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional health care and innovative treatments and services throughout southern New Jersey and beyond for more than 138 years,” said George E. Norcross III, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cooper University Health Care.

The Newsweek Best Hospitals list is an annual ranking that evaluates hospitals based on several key criteria. The methodology is designed to assess the quality of care, clinical performance, and reputation of hospitals nationwide. The main criteria include:

  • Hospital Quality Metrics: Quality metrics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the AHA Annual Survey of Hospitals Database, and accreditation data from various sources were considered.
  • Nationwide Online Survey: From July to August 2024, an online survey among medical professionals (doctors, hospital managers, and health care workers) was conducted in cooperation with Newsweek. Hospitals from all U.S. states were included in the survey. Participants were asked to recommend the best hospitals (in and out of state) based on their expertise.
  • Results from HCAHPS patient experience surveys.
  • Statista PROMS implementation Survey: To account for the increasing importance of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), hospitals that participated in the voluntary PROMs implementation survey received a PROMs implementation score.

“This recognition from Newsweek underscores Cooper’s mission to provide extraordinary health care to our community. It speaks to the hard work, dedication, and passion of our physicians, nurses, and all our team members who continually go above and beyond to ensure the best outcomes for our patients,” said Kevin O’Dowd, JD, Co-CEO of Cooper University Health Care.

“Being named among the best in the state reinforces Cooper’s leadership in clinical excellence and innovation. Every day, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality care, and this award reflects the teamwork and collaboration that defines Cooper. We are honored to serve our patients with the compassion and expertise they deserve,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, Co-CEO of Cooper.

Cooper continues to grow and expand as it serves the community. In July, Cooper acquired Cape Regional Health System. Later this year, Cooper will break ground on the transformative $3 billion Camden campus expansion.
