May Is Stroke Awareness Month: Act F.A.S.T. if You Notice Signs of Stroke

Each May, the American Heart American Association and American Stroke Association promotes National Stroke Awareness Month. Stroke is the number five cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. The faster stroke victims are treated, the less damage to the brain. Patients suffering from symptoms of acute stroke should be evaluated by a physician within 10 minutes of arrival to an emergency department. Treatment – either clot-busting medication or neurointerventional surgery – should be initiated within one hour. When it comes to knowing the stroke warning signs – to help expedite the treatment process – only about two out of three Americans can correctly identify at least one sign.

Cooper Neurological Institute wants everyone to learn how to recognize the signs of a stroke, because Time is Brain. Remember the acronym F.A.S.T.:
F=Face Drooping.
A=Arm Weakness.
S=Speech Difficulty.
T=Time to Call 9-1-1.
