Cooper Physician Co-Edits Adult Critical Care Medicine Reference Textbook

International critical care and sepsis expert R. Phillip Dellinger, MD, FCCM, FCCP, Professor of Medicine at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, edited the just released comprehensive critical care textbook for medical professionals – Critical Care Medicine: Principles of Diagnosis and Management in the Adult, 5th edition, published by Elsevier. The textbook was edited in partnership with Joseph E. Parrillo, MD, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine at Seton Hall University, and expands upon traditional intensive care unit practice to the many specialty multi-specialty physician and other health care providers who care for patients in the critical care setting. Dr. Dellinger also co-edited the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition of this textbook. The textbook has 78 topic-oriented chapters and more than 140 authors from around the world.

“I am really proud of this edition and especially gratified by the contributions of my peers at Cooper,” said Dr. Dellinger. “Of the contributors to the textbook, 38 were physicians and faculty of Cooper University Health Care and Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. These physicians are experts in their fields and perform at the top of their profession.”

The volume is a worldwide top-selling critical care textbook and will serve as a leading reference for physicians practicing in a critical care setting. The textbook is published in both hard copy and electronic web-based versions. It provides practical, evidence-based guidance to effectively manage common complications in the ICU including severe sepsis, septic shock, surgical infections, neurogenic and anaphylactic shock, severe heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. In addition, it provides in-depth coverage of recent advances in bedside critical care, in particular bedside ultrasound and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. It features an in-depth self-assessment program with questions, answers, and rationale to enhance learning for the bedside health care provider.

“Cooper is privileged to have a physician of Dr. Dellinger’s caliber on our staff,” said Eric E. Kupersmith, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive at Cooper University Health Care. “His expertise has had a tremendous impact not only locally for our patients and learners, but he has also made deep contributions having a global impact in the practice of critical care medicine to the next generation of physicians.”

Dr. Dellinger has authored more than 300 journal articles and book chapters as well as edited more than 30 books and journal issues in the fields of critical care medicine and lung disease, featuring both laboratory and clinical research. He is associate editor of Critical Care Medicine journal, past president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), Master Fellow in the College of Critical Care Medicine, and recipient of the SCCM Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.

“We are proud of the track record of this worldwide, top-selling critical care textbook,” said Nancy Duffy, Content Strategist at Elsevier. “To have sustained the success of a reference textbook over 24 years speaks to the quality of the product and the ability of the book to capture cutting-edge changes in critical care practice.”
