Standards of the Month (June, July and August)

June:  Managing up the EMR

When physicians, particularly in the outpatient area are confronted with the challenges of documentation during a busy clinic session, it helps to document during the visit.  Clinicians can “manage up” the EMR through simple statements like, “I want to document some of these important things you are telling me,” or “the EMR here is our way to communicate with all of your docs, so I will make sure our discussion and findings are in the record for Dr. Smith to see.”  It is also suggested that outpatient physicians encourage their patients to sign-in to MyChart through EPIC.

July: Hand washing and the communication surrounding that.

This is a simple message of patient safety and one which is an organizational priority.  When cleaning hands, it is suggested that we let the patient know that we are, “cleaning my hands for your protection.”

August: Acknowledging others in the room.

Often times in health care delivery, a family member or caregiver can be the strongest ally for a physician.  When entering a room, it is important to acknowledge everyone in the room with an introduction of who you are.  This should be no different than if you are meeting someone at a party.
