Cooper Celebrates Volunteers, Honors “Volunteer of Year”

In observance of National Volunteer Month, Cooper University Health Care recognized the hundreds of dedicated men and women who donate their time and efforts to support the hospital’s mission, to serve, to heal, to educate.

A thank-you luncheon was held on April 20, 2018, to honor the 654 active volunteers who performed a remarkable 67,025 hours of service in 2017. A number of special awards were presented at the luncheon. Read more.

Cancer Genetics CME Event Draws Large Audience of Health Care Professionals

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper hosted a CME event for physicians and other health care providers at the DoubleTree Suites in Mt. Laurel, NJ.  Approximately 100 attendees took part in the program, which focused on The Role of Cancer Genetics in Precision Medicine.  Presentations included discussion on current approaches to genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes, potential benefits and limitations of the multigene panel testing approach for hereditary cancer syndromes, and the implications, risks, and benefits of genetic testing for the individual and their family. MD Anderson at Cooper Offers Free Program on Cancer and Genetics at Willingboro Public Library

Have you ever worried about what role family history plays in cancer?  Cancer experts from MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper will discuss this topic at a free community lecture on cancer and genetics at the Willingboro Public Library from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, May 31, 2018.

Robert A. Somer, MD, head of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, and genetic counselor Jennie Stone, MS, LCGC, will discuss cancer and family history and how advances in genetic testing are shedding light on new genes involved in the development of cancer. Read more.

Cooper Dermatologist Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award

Warren R. Heymann, MD, head of the Division of Dermatology at Cooper University Health Care and professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, was recently awarded the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Medical Dermatology Society.

The honor is given in recognition of a lifetime of inspired patient care as a medical dermatologist, mentoring of future medical dermatologists, and research to advance medical dermatology. Read more.

Cooper Commemorates Organ Donor Awareness Month With Flag Raising and Planting of Pinwheels

Giving the gift of life through organ donation is one of the most selfless legacies a person can leave behind. On April 2, 2018, several family members of organ donors joined Cooper University Health Care staff and representatives from NJ Sharing Network to raise a special “Donate Life” flag high above Cooper in recognition of April’s Donate Life Month.

The flag, which was signed with personal messages from 30 organ donors’ families at a Donor Remembrance Ceremony held March 22, 2018, at Cooper, will fly in front of Cooper for the month of April. Read more.

Cooper Opens Eight New Operating Rooms to Meet Growing Patient Volume

To meet the growth in the number of patients seeking surgery, today Cooper University Health Care opened eight new operating rooms including a special suite for vascular procedures, increasing its total number of operating rooms system-wide to 38.

As a leading academic, tertiary care health system with the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, demand for services at Cooper have grown over the past six years, particularly in the area of surgical services.  Read more.

Cooper Learning Center To Offer Fifth Annual Facets of Dyslexia Conference on April 21

Dyslexia is a learning disability that causes difficulties with reading, writing and spelling. Students with dyslexia can effectively learn with appropriate educational interventions and teaching methods tailored to their specific learning disability.  According to some experts, up to 15 percent of the population has dyslexia and related disorders.

The Cooper Learning Center at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper will examine this important topic at their fifth annual Dyslexia and Language Related Disabilities Conference: Facets of Dyslexia on Saturday, April 21, 2018 from 8 a.m. Read more.
