Cooper University Health Care recently became the first hospital in the world to use a new virtual reality (VR) system for patient rehabilitation following a stroke, announced Tudor G. Jovin, MD, chief and chairman of the Cooper Neurological Institute, and internationally renowned neurologist and researcher.

Prior to the commercial launch of The REAL™ Immersive System, a team of physicians and therapists at the Cooper Neurological Institute (CNI) worked closely with California-based medical device producer, Penumbra, in the research and development phase for the new system. Read more.

Andrea M. Russo, MD,  a cardiologist and director of electrophysiology and arrhythmia services at Cooper University Health Care, was one of the lead investigators in a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which examined the ability of smartwatches to detect atrial fibrillation in users.  Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib, is an irregular heartbeat that, without treatment, increases a person’s risk of stroke. Today our Population Health team at Cooper donated their time to make 371 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for Cathedral Kitchen, the largest emergency food provider in Camden, NJ. Way to go!

The Cooper Community Heath team was back on the Fire Department circuit again last night visiting the Medford Fire Department in Medford, NJ. First responders received screenings for skin cancer and blood pressure, and were educated about cardiac conditions, prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.

The goal of Cooper’s Community Health Outreach team is to promote healthy behaviors and preventative care in collaboration with community partners. Read more.

Congratulations to Antoinette Spevetz, MD, FCCM, FACP, FCCP, who was recognized by Cooper’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) Committee for her dedication and career milestone in GME leadership, serving as Cooper University Health Care’s Designated Institutional Official for the past ten years. Since 2009, Dr. Spevetz’s service has been a vital contribution to the education of Cooper University Hospital’s residents and fellows, preparing them to be successful physicians of the future. Military leaders, hospital executives attend ceremony honoring first graduates

Cooper University Health Care is one of the leading academic health systems providing medical training to military personnel. Recently, Cooper became the third location in the nation to provide specialized medical training to active duty and reserve personnel from all branches U.S. military as part of Operation SMART (Strategic Medical Asset Readiness Training). On Friday, December 6, 2019, Adrienne Kirby, PhD, FACHE, was recognized by the Healthcare Planning and Marketing Society of New Jersey with a Special Achievement Award during the organization’s Annual Meeting. Dr. Kirby served as the CEO for Cooper University Health Care until 2019.

Across her career, she is has known to champion community health and the importance of service to the community.
