American Heart Association Award Recognizes Cooper University Hospital’s Commitment to Quality Stroke Care

Cooper University Health Care received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines^®-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: Stroke^SM Honor Roll. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper has joined a Lung Cancer Early Detection study aimed at improving lung cancer screening methods for those at risk. The study is part of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Moon Shots Program^TM, a collaborative effort to accelerate advances that save patients’ lives.

Five members of the Cooper University Hospital EMS team were honored by the Camden County Metro Police Department for heroic work during an incident that occurred in March. The quarterly award presentation took place at Rowan University’s Camden campus and was presided over by NBC 10’s news anchor Vai Sikahema.

The event was dedicated to recognizing  first responders and other organizations who performed in cooperation with Camden County Police. Read more.

More than 70 students from HB Wilson Elementary School in Camden, NJ, visited Cooper University Health Care on May 30, 2018, to take part in the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper’s Pediatric Health Fair. The event teaches  kids healthy habits at a young age. Through interactive games and engaging discussions, students learned about health, wellness, prevention, and safety from hospital and medical school volunteers. Read more.

Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper Pediatrics outpatient office in Camden celebrated national Red Nose Day on Thursday, May 24, 2018. Red Nose Day – launched in 2015 – is dedicated to ending child poverty around the world. The money raised by Red Nose Day has benefited programs for children and young people in all 50 states and in 34 countries internationally. Read more.

On May 22, 2018, Cooper University Health Care presented the 2018 Cooper Military Employee of the Year Award to trauma surgeon John Chovanes, DO, FACS, LTC, USAR MC, at a pre-Memorial Day celebration for Cooper employees who are veterans and/or active military.

The Cooper Military Employee of the Year Award – which will be presented annually – was established to formally recognize the outstanding contributions a Cooper staff member has made to the health system, the community, and the nation, as well as in support of Cooper’s mission to serve, to heal, to educate. Expanding to meet growing patient demand, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper recently opened a new outpatient diagnostic mammography center on its Camden campus.

“This is another exciting day as MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper continues to transform cancer care for the people of South Jersey and the region,” said Adrienne Kirby, PhD, FACHE, executive chairman and chief executive officer at Cooper, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Read more.

Steven C. Bonawitz, MD, FACS, head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cooper University Health Care, was among the team of nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons that performed the world’s first total penis and scrotum transplant. The 14-hour surgery took place at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on March 26.

The transplant recipient, an Afghanistan war veteran who was severely injured by a roadside bomb, was the recipient of a donated penis and scrotum and partial abdominal wall from a deceased donor. Read more.
