New Technology for Bacterial and Yeast Identification

On Monday, August 12, 2019, MALDI–TOF M will be implemented at Cooper University Health Care’s Microbiology Section of the Pathology Department for bacterial and yeast identification.

MALDI is a more efficient technology that provides:

  • Faster turnaround time for at least 24 hours of final bacterial and yeast identification results that you would be able to act upon.
  • More accurate and precise identifications of bacteria and yeasts.
  • New identifications that were not available before. MALDI will greatly increase our capability to identify organisms that we were not able to identify using previous methods.
  • The ability for Epidemiology and Infection Prevention teams to act more quickly on results than traditional methods.
  • Antibiotic stewardship improvement (i.e., the ability to tailor antibiotic therapy faster).

In addition to being a very lean technology that produces much less biohazard waste, MALDI is also approximately five to 10 times less expensive than our current technology for identification.
