Annual Donation from Former NICU Baby

Melvin Sheppard has been saving pennies every year since he was seven years old. It wasn’t to buy himself a new bike or something else a typical boy his age would want. Instead, Melvin has saved pennies to help babies born prematurely at Cooper University Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Melvin, 14, was born at Cooper nine-weeks premature, weighing only 2.9 pounds. His life was saved due to the exceptional care and life saving equipment in Cooper’s NICU. Now, a vibrant and healthy teenager living in Moorestown with his mom and dad, Melvin wants to help other children like him who are born prematurely. Yesterday, Melvin donated approximately $1,500 in pennies.
