How Abstaining From Alcohol Can Improve Your Health

After a festive holiday season, many people begin the new year with resolutions to make positive changes in their lives. Not surprisingly, the most common resolutions include, exercising more, eating healthier, losing weight, and quitting smoking. A new trending practice many are choosing to take part in is “Dry January.”

Dry January involves abstaining from alcohol for the entire month, but tempering alcohol intake doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach. “Damp January,” which is reducing your alcohol intake, is becoming a popular alternative. Either way, taking part in this initiative gives you a chance to reflect on how much you may be drinking and your relationship with alcohol. The goal is to thoughtfully consider your alcohol intake and its effect on your health and overall well-being as you start the new year.

The potential health benefits of taking part in Dry or Damp January may be great, even if your normal alcohol consumption is minimal.   Eliminating or reducing alcohol for just one month may help improve your energy levels, help you lose weight, improve your sleep, lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and reduce your risk of many types of cancer. Evidence also suggests that cutting alcohol consumption, even on a short-term basis, can improve liver function.

Here are some more benefits of an alcohol-free month:

  • You’ll save money. Fancy cocktails can cost up to $15 each. Two or three of those a week can really add up!
  • Your skin may look brighter. Alcohol dehydrates the body, which leads to dull, dry skin. New research also shows that the toxins in alcohol can speed up the skin’s aging process.
  • No hangovers! The benefits of waking up refreshed will do wonders for your mood and outlook on the day ahead. You’ll have more time and energy for fun, productive activities.

“The possible benefits of participating in some version of Dry January are significant, for both your mental and physical health. Reducing your alcohol intake can improve your mood and energy levels whether you drink only occasionally or more frequently,” says Kaitlan Baston, MD, MSc, DFASAM, Medical Director of Cooper’s Addiction Medicine Program. “However, if you find you are taking part in heavy drinking – generally more than three or four drinks a day, several days a week – be sure to talk to your doctor before jumping into Dry January. Those who drink more heavily may experience some symptoms of alcohol withdrawal that may require more support. If that is the case, you are not alone, and we are happy to help.”

To make Dry January successful, here are a few simple steps you can take:

  • Write down your goals. Track how you feel in a daily journal and take note if any challenge throughout the day made it especially hard to skip your glass of wine or cocktail at the end of the day.
  • Tell your close friends and family. Let them know your plan and ask for support when needed.
  • Identify potential triggers. Are there specific events or locations that make you crave a drink? If so, try to avoid those locations, if possible, for the month.

At the end of Dry January, pay attention to how you are feeling and how abstaining from alcohol for a month has affected other aspects of your life, such as your relationships, work, and overall productivity. Cutting back on alcohol doesn’t have to be a goal just for January. You can take a break any time throughout the year to help achieve your health goals.

“In addition to the potential mental and physical health benefits, taking part in Dry January offers a great opportunity to evaluate your relationship with alcohol and consider your daily routine and your quality of life as you go along,” adds Dr. Baston. “As an addiction physician, my goal is to help you meet your goals.

  • Dile a tus amigos cercanos y familiares.
