Christian Squillante, MD
Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology

What was your first job?
Other than the occasional lemonade stand in front of my house, my first “real” job was a cashier at the supermarket in my town.
Tell us something about you that people wouldn’t expect.
I am an avid wine fan and collector. Oh, and that I am known as the “Sock Doc” for my ever-changing collection of vibrant socks.
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
My favorite vacation spot is in Ravello, Italy, on the Amalfi Coast.
Tell us your favorite book, movie or song – and why.
My absolute favorite song is “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. It always takes me to a happy place and reminds me of the support my loved ones have given me over the years.
What inspired you to become a cancer specialist?
It was a combination of things. When I was in medical residency I thought I was going to be a cardiologist. My grandfather was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and passed away that year, so I spent a lot of time thrust into the world of oncology. I think it changed my perspective a bit and I developed a keen passion and interest for oncology.
What is your essential patient care philosophy?
That no matter what, I’m here for my patients. Your concerns are my concerns. I wouldn’t be in this profession if it wasn’t for the patients. A diagnosis of cancer is truly terrifying, no matter what, and I’d like to think at the end of the day I can be that rock of support for my patients during what may be the most difficult time of their lives.
What do you hope your patients say about you to their family and friends?
That they would recommend a family member to me. That is the ultimate compliment.
What three words best describe you?
Empathetic, energetic, and dedicated.
Outside of your family and your work, what are your passions (pets, music, travel, history, etc.)?
I love travelling and exploring different areas of the world. I love to read and learn about wine and I have a growing collection! At the end of the day, I love spending time with my friends. The company of others is very important to me.
If you could have dinner with any three persons living or deceased, who would they be and why?
My Grandfather, Adele, and Betty White.
