MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Surgical Oncologists Appointed to the Editorial Board of Prestigious Medical Journal

Francis R. Spitz, MD, FACS, vice chief of the Department of Surgery at Cooper University Health Care, and deputy director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, and Young K. Hong, MD, MPH, surgical oncologist at MD Anderson at Cooper, were recently appointed to the editorial board of the Annals of Surgical Oncology.

Annals of Surgical Oncology (ASO) is the official journal of the Society of Surgical Oncology and the leading resource in surgical oncology, promoting both clinical and translational cancer research, with an emphasis on clinical trials. Read more.

Commentary: “Hot Tea and Risk of Esophageal Cancer”

On March 20, 2019, 6, 2018, “Drinking very hot tea almost doubles risk of cancer, new study says” ran on CNN:

“Many people start their day with a cup of tea. But those who drink it piping hot could be increasing their risk of esophageal cancer, according to a new study.”

“Researchers found that tea drinkers who liked their beverage to be warmer than 60 degrees Celsius (140 degrees Fahrenheit) and consumed more than 700 ml of tea per day — about two large cups– had a 90% higher risk of esophageal cancer, when compared to those who drank less tea and at cooler temperatures.”

Commentary: “Genetic counseling prior to and following testing is critical”

On March 6, “F.D.A. Approves First Home Testing for 3 Breast Cancer Mutations, With Caveats” ran in the New York Times:

“The Food and Drug Administration for the first time has authorized a genetic testing company to offer screenings for three breast cancer mutations common in Ashkenazi Jews, giving consumers the ability to initiate testing at home and see results without talking to a doctor or counselor.”

American Cancer Society Recognizes MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper was recently recognized by the American Cancer Society (ACS) for our collaboration in furthering our shared mission to eliminate cancer and improve the lives of those diagnosed with cancer through our research, advocacy, support, and patient programs efforts.

In 2017, MD Anderson Cooper partnered with ACS on many cancer prevention and education programs including:

  • 80% by 2018 Program – an initiative designed to improve colorectal cancer screening rates in our communities through coordinated leadership, strategic planning, advocacy and access to colorectal cancer screening services.

Dr. Diane Barton Complementary Medicine Program Celebrates the Holidays

On Thursday, December 7, the Dr. Diane Barton Complementary Medicine Program celebrated the holidays with an Open House for all MD Anderson Cooper patients.  Many thanks to Houlihan’s of Cherry Hill, NJ, for providing the delicious appetizers that were served as attendees enjoyed music, companionship, and lots of good cheer.


Becoming a cancer survivor starts the moment a patient is diagnosed, and at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper we realize that physical healing is only part of our mission. Read more.

World Pancreatic Cancer Day

According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database, there will be an estimated 53,670 new pancreatic cancer cases this year in the U.S. While many patients still die from this disease, this proportion of patients has been stable for the last ten years, suggesting progress is being made in battling this challenging type of cancer.

“Pancreatic cancer and cancers of the liver and bile ducts are complicated and difficult to manage,” says Frank Spitz, MD, Hepatobiliary Surgeon and Deputy Director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. Read more.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Holds Educational Dense Breast Clinic

This week, the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper’s breast health team held “Dense Breast and Abnormal Breast Imaging,” an opportunity for women to learn more about the management of abnormalities found on mammograms and how having dense breasts can affect their risk for breast cancer. Twenty-six women attended this interactive program, which was presented by Beth Ann Quattrocchi, APN, Pauline Germaine, DO, and Vivian Bea, MD.
