Cooper University Health Care Participates in BOOST-3 Trial Which Seeks to Improve Outcomes After Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is sudden damage to the brain caused by an outside force to the head – such as a car crash, a fall, or something hitting the head. An estimated 2.5 million Americans sustain TBI each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Severe TBI contributes to 30% of all injury-related deaths, and many who survive are left permanently disabled. Read more.

Cooper Team Celebrates National EMS Week

May 19-25, 2019, is the 45th annual National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation’s communities. The National Association of EMTs (@NAEMT) partners with the American College of Emergency Physicians (@ACEP) to lead annual EMS Week activities. Together, NAEMT and ACEP are working to ensure that the important contributions of EMS practitioners in safeguarding the health, safety, and well being of their communities are fully celebrated and recognized. Cooper Honors Advanced Practice Nurse With “Military Employee of the Year” Award

Cooper University Health Care presented the 2019 Cooper Military Employee of the Year Award to advanced practice nurse Ella Hawk, a member of the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery team. The celebratory event, honoring Cooper employees who are veterans and/or active military, was held on May 21, 2019. (Watch the presentation here.)

Cooper Cardiologist to Head International Society

Andrea M. Russo, MD, a cardiologist and director of the electrophysiology and arrhythmia service at Cooper University Health, was inducted as the president of the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) at its annual meeting in San Francisco May 8-11, 2019.

HRS is an international society of electrophysiologists with over 10,000 members internationally and professionals from more than 70 countries. Founded in 1979, it is the leading resource on Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology in the world. Read more.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and Holy Redeemer Announce Plans to Expand Advanced Cancer Care to Residents of Southeastern Pennsylvania

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and Holy Redeemer Health System have signed a Letter of Intent to develop a joint cancer program at Holy Redeemer Hospital. The agreement will expand the reach of Cooper University Health Care’s partnership with one of the leading cancer centers in the nation, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

The physicians at MD Anderson at Cooper will provide clinical oversight of the cancer program at the Holy Redeemer campus and beyond. Read more.

Cooper Researchers Develop a Method for Measuring Compassion in Health Care

Caregiver compassion is a vital element of health care quality. Studies have shown that compassion from caregivers – as perceived by patients – can lead to improved outcomes for patients, lower health care costs, and even reduced burnout among health care providers. As researchers examine the effect of compassion on these outcomes, a key question that emerges is “how do we measure compassion?” Read more.

Camden Celebrates Opening of New Turf Field at KIPP Cooper Norcross Lanning Square Campus

Athletic Field Funded by $250,000 grant from the Philadelphia Eagles, the NFL Foundation and LISC and a matching $250,000 grant from The Cooper Foundation

Today, KIPP Cooper Norcross Academy (KCNA) celebrated the opening of a new turf field at its Lanning Square campus in Camden, New Jersey. Teachers, students, parents, community leaders, and NFL Foundation representatives gathered for a ribbon cutting at the new athletic field, which was installed thanks to a $250,000 grant from the Philadelphia Eagles through the National Football League Foundation Grassroots Program and a $250,000 matching grant from The Cooper Foundation. Special Delivery for Patients to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Just in time for Mother’s Day, volunteers with The Lauren Rose Albert Foundation/ Mothers Matter Program visited Cooper University Health Care on May 9 to bring cheer to mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers with a donation of special gift baskets.

Since 2001, the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation has reached out to mothers-in-need by donating thousands of gift baskets overflowing with personal health and beauty care products to numerous health care facilities, women’s shelters and crisis programs, child care centers, and facilities such as Ronald McDonald House and the Memorial Veterans Home during the week of Mother’s Day. Nurses Honored During 2019 Nursing Excellence Awards

Philadelphia resident Sean Deiter, BSN, RN, was named Nurse of the Year yesterday evening at the 2019 Nursing Excellence Awards hosted by Cooper University Health Care and The Cooper Foundation. [See all photos.]

Deiter is a registered nurse in Cooper’s Intensive Care Unit. In addition to Nurse of the Year, he was also presented with the William and Eileen Archer Award for Excellence in Critical Care Nursing. Read more.
