Lourdes Alanis, MD, MPH, a third-year medical resident at Cooper University Health Care, won the SIR Case Competition during the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) 2017 Conference held in Washington, D.C., in March.
Dr. Alanis’ case presentation, titled “Aortocoronary Saphenous Vein Graft Pseudoaneurysm Presenting as an Anterior Mediastinal Mass,” was selected as the winner among the 70 cases submitted nationally. With a swipe of a pen, South Jersey community leaders made history today as they announced their commitment to implement changes within their individual organizations that will increase colorectal cancer screening in Camden and surrounding areas.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 135,000 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the United States this year, and over 50,000 will die from the disease. Read more.

As more Americans are getting behind the wheel, there has also been a sharp increase in the number of fatal accidents on the road. The National Safety Council (NSC) this week released a new report indicating that the number of fatalities due to crashes is up six percent in 2016 from the previous year. Charlotte Olson decided before Christmas 2016 that she would like to do some kind of service project to help others. Inspired by the national Reach Out and Read program, Charlotte decided to collect books and donate them for hospitalized children at the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Health Care. Charlotte’s goal was to collect 1,000 books. She started by telling friends and neighbors and placed a large box on her family’s front porch. Read more.
The Trauma Center at Cooper University Health Care recently purchased $10,000 worth of tourniquets which will be distributed to all officers in the Camden County Police Department in conjunction with specialized bleeding control training they received from Cooper’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team.
Since it began operation in January 2016, Cooper EMS has been offering a Bleeding Control for the Injured (B-Con) course for police, fire, and school personnel as part of its community outreach efforts. Read more.

Cooper University Health Care was among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for raising organ and tissue donation awareness in a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The campaign has added 400,000 registered organ and tissue donors since 2011.
Cooper conducted awareness and registry campaigns to educate staff, patients, visitors, and community members about the critical need for organ and tissue donors and, by doing so, increased the number of potential donors. Read more.
