Tennis Veterans Face off in South Jersey to Benefit the Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper

Mats Wilander and Jan-Michael Gambill will face off in South Jersey for the first time in October, when they'll play an exhibition match at the Cherry Hill Pro Tennis Classic. The exhibition match is the main attraction of the event, scheduled for October 24 at the Cherry Hill Health and Racquet Club on Old Cuthbert Road.

Beer As Good As Water for Rehydration? Not So Fast.

Last week, the Courier-Post featured an article in its “Health & Wellness” section about a study that suggests that beer is just as hydrating as water following exercise. However, Carla Fynan, Manager of Clinical Nutrition at Cooper, says exercise and alcohol do not mix, and any combination of such would not enhance one’s performance.

A Global Battle Against Cancer

The July issue of South Jersey Magazine published an article about a startling new statistic indicating that cancer deaths could double in the next 20 years. According to the United Nations World Health Organizations International Agency for Research on Cancer, the number of annual diagnoses will increase from 12.7 million in 2008 to 21.4 million in 2030; the number of deaths will increase from 7.6 million to 13.2 million.

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) today named new leadership and members of its Board of Directors and Subspecialty Boards, which encompass the field of internal medicine. New to the Board is Andrea M. Russo, MD, Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Services at Cooper University Hospital.

Founder of Psychiatry Department Remembered

The Philadelphia Inquirer featured an article in remembrance of George A. Rogers, 85, a founder of the psychiatry department at Cooper University Hospital. Rogers died of pneumonia on Monday, June 28, 2010, with friends and family by his side.

Susan Bass Levin, President and CEO of the Cooper Foundation, is one of the “Outstanding Women” featured in this summer’s issue of Camden County Woman. In addition to the many operational tasks of building a strong infrastructure for the Foundation, Susan is leading the community redevelopment efforts of the Cooper Health System in Camden.

The Center for Dermatologic Surgery, run by Cooper dermatologic surgeon Naomi Lawrence, MD, was the site of a special art exhibit called “Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful” which was featured on the front page of the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Daily Magazine.

Frank W. Bowen, III, MD, Comments on Lung Cancer Study for WHYY

Frank W. Bowen, III, MD, Director of Thoracic Aortic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at Cooper, was featured in a segment for WHYY. The story focused on a new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), that found that some people diagnosed with lung cancer decide not to get surgery even though it is the best treatment option.

‘Summer in the City’ Concert Series Kicks-Off at Cooper Commons Park in Camden

On Thursday, the first of the 'Summer in the City' concerts at Cooper Commons Park debuted with the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble, the world-renowned African dance troupe based at Camden's Unity Community Center, having the honor of performing the opening show.
