Cooper Employees Fan Out Across Camden, South Jersey for Day of Service

WHAT: More than 90 doctors, nurses, administrative leaders, and allied health professionals from Cooper University Health Care will fan out across eight different sites in Camden, Burlington, Gloucester counties for a day of community service. Cooper employees will work in community gardens, prepare meals at the Cathedral Kitchen, help out at an animal shelter, and organize donations at a food pantry among others. Read more.

Tools equip new parents with CPR and choking relief skills to use in emergencies.

The American Heart Association (AHA) with the support from the Amerigroup Foundation has donated 500 Infant CPR Anytime® kits to Cooper University Health Care for use in training new parents on emergency lifesaving techniques. Cooper will provide the Infant CPR Anytime kits to parents whose babies are discharged from the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and will be the first hospital in New Jersey to offer the Infant CPR Anytime training on their telehealth patient portal. MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Participating in Lung Cancer Early Detection Study

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper logoMD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper has joined a Lung Cancer Early Detection study aimed at improving lung cancer screening methods for those at risk. The study is part of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Moon Shots ProgramTM, a collaborative effort to accelerate advances that save patients’ lives.

Members of Cooper EMS Team Recognized by Camden County Police Department for Outstanding Work

Five members of the Cooper University Hospital EMS team were honored by the Camden County Metro Police Department for heroic work during an incident that occurred in March. The quarterly award presentation took place at Rowan University’s Camden campus and was presided over by NBC 10’s news anchor Vai Sikahema.

The event was dedicated to recognizing  first responders and other organizations who performed in cooperation with Camden County Police. Read more.

Cooper Honors Trauma Surgeon With “Military Employee of the Year” Award

On May 22, 2018, Cooper University Health Care presented the 2018 Cooper Military Employee of the Year Award to trauma surgeon John Chovanes, DO, FACS, LTC, USAR MC, at a pre-Memorial Day celebration for Cooper employees who are veterans and/or active military.

The Cooper Military Employee of the Year Award – which will be presented annually – was established to formally recognize the outstanding contributions a Cooper staff member has made to the health system, the community, and the nation, as well as in support of Cooper’s mission to serve, to heal, to educate. Expanding to meet growing patient demand, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper recently opened a new outpatient diagnostic mammography center on its Camden campus.

Cooper Surgeon Part of Team That Performed World’s First Total Penis and Scrotum Transplant at Johns Hopkins Hospital

Steven C. Bonawitz, MD, FACS, head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Cooper University Health Care, was among the team of nine plastic surgeons and two urological surgeons that performed the world’s first total penis and scrotum transplant. The 14-hour surgery took place at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on March 26.

The transplant recipient, an Afghanistan war veteran who was severely injured by a roadside bomb, was the recipient of a donated penis and scrotum and partial abdominal wall from a deceased donor. Read more.

Cooper University Health Care Announces Winner of First “Cooper Civic Leadership Award”

Shenelle Alexander, an undergraduate nursing student at Rutgers University-Camden, was named as the first winner of the $1,000 Cooper Civic Leadership Award at the Seventh Annual Chancellor’s Awards for Civic Engagement held April 26, 2018.

Cooper University Health Care established the Civic Leadership Award earlier this year to honor a Rutgers University-Camden student who exemplifies outstanding service to the Camden community. Read more.
