Cooper University Hospital has opened the doors to the brand new $220 million patient Pavilion on the Camden Health Sciences Campus. The 10-story, 312,000-square-foot Pavilion represents the largest construction expansion on campus in more than 30 years.
“Whether you are a patient or a visitor, your experience at Cooper will change dramatically,” said John P. Sheridan, Jr., President and CEO at Cooper. “The same high quality of patient care is now enhanced with a new atmosphere. Our new lobby, which is nearly triple the size of the previous Kelemen lobby, will astound you. The patient- and family-centered amenities include a new restaurant, coffee shop, resource center and service desk, and a special suite to help patients and their families with insurance information and registration.”
Cooper’s new patient Pavilion is a direct reflection of the growth in services that Cooper has experienced over the past several years. Home of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Camden, Cooper has earned wide recognition for its success in clinical care, driven primarily by the growth of the Cooper Heart Institute, the Cooper Bone & Joint Institute, the Cooper Cancer Institute, the Cooper Neurological Institute, Cooper Trauma and Cooper Critical Care.
As the leading healthcare provider for South Jersey, Cooper’s new patient Pavilion offers:
- 12 new operating room suites.
- 60 private medical/surgical rooms
- A new, technologically advanced 30-bed Intensive Care Unit.
- A 12,000-square-foot addition to the Emergency Department (2009).
- An elaborate laboratory automation facility.
- Convenient campus re-orientation from Haddon Avenue to Martin Luther King Boulevard with a new front entrance and drop-off zone.
- Expanded customer-friendly public lobby space.
- Future expansion space for up to 120 additional beds and imaging/procedure suites.
Patients who receive care in the new Pavilion will appreciate the special features in each patient room, as will their families and visitors.
All patient rooms are private. In addition to helping patients sleep better by allowing fewer interruptions by their roommates, their visitors and caregivers, private rooms reduce the rate of infection within the hospital, according to the Center for Healthcare Design.
All patient rooms are visible from the nursing station. A diagonal configuration allows improved staff visualization of each patient.
All patient rooms offer family and visitor accommodations. Rooms are separated into two areas: the family portion of the room and a nursing/staff area. The family portion, located next to the window, offers a place for a family member to spend the night in a convertible sleep accommodation, as well as a small desk and furniture for visitors.
All patient rooms have a flat screen TV and internet capability. Much like an upscale hotel, the rooms provide a more residential environment for patients and visitors.
Other aesthetic features include an airy, sky-lighted lobby laden with greenery and upholstered seating; a soon-to-be-installed outdoor Healing Garden; and an interior Garden Walk, where lighted exhibits feature interesting historical and factual photographs and information about Cooper.
Clearly, superior clinical care and options, top doctors, advanced technology, and a patient- and family-centered environment make Cooper the hospital of choice in the region. The new Pavilion further exhibits those attributes, reflecting Cooper’s commitment to serious medicine and customer service, and enhancing Cooper’s status as a world-class hospital.
