Providing compassionate care during Pride Month and beyond.

When it comes to health care, discrimination and accessibility are two of the most significant problems faced by the LGBTQ+ community. For Americans who identify as LGBTQ+, more than half of them say they have experienced some form of health care discrimination.

Cooper University Health Care, the region’s leading academic health system, recently hired Justin Schweitzer, DO, as Medical Director for the Center for LGBTQ+ Health at Cooper. His focus is to promote a healthy lifestyle for all of his patients and their families and to increase access to care for those in our region who identify as LGBTQ+.

“Patient access to safe, inclusive, and compassionate care is a priority for Cooper and for me,” says Dr. Schweitzer. “Working as a primary care doctor addressing the needs and concerns of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and non-binary patients for several years, I am happy to bring my experience to Cooper and provide care for patients here.”

“Having to explain yourself and your identity to health care providers can be frustrating and cause anxiety, which can lead people to withhold important information or stop seeking care,” continues Dr. Schweitzer. “It is exciting to be part of such an inclusive and compassionate team. We are here for our local LGBTQ+ community to provide services, education, and support when they need it.”

The Center for LGBTQ+ Health at Cooper provides care for a comprehensive range of unique, routine, and preventive health needs. Our team of experts at Cooper includes caring and supportive providers across multiple specialties, including primary care, plastic surgery, breast surgery, urology, clinical psychology, and OB/GYN. These experts can provide diverse care, including:

  • Primary care services, including PrEP for HIV prevention, STD testing, sexual health counseling, and hormone therapy.
  • An early intervention program for patients who are HIV+, including two clinical health psychologists, medical case managers, and a PrEP Patient Navigator.
  • Partnerships with Cooper’s breast and plastic surgery departments to offer top surgery to patients looking for chest masculinization (mastectomy).
  • Urological services, including orchiectomy, testicular implants, and management of complications after bottom surgery.
  • Mental health providers who are LGBTQ+ affirming.
  • OB/GYN care for transgender men.

“We also work to address the societal pressures that have led to higher rates of substance abuse, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicide attempts among members of the LGBTQ+ community,” says Dr. Schweitzer. “At Cooper, we are committed to helping to break health care barriers faced by this community.”
