On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, Cooper’s Community Health team partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to educate patients at Cooper Internal Medicine & Specialty Care at JFK offices in Willingboro, NJ.  The purpose of the outreach event was to improve the health and wellness of the community by educating patients on the importance of heart health through the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors.  Read more.

A new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows increased rates of implementation of hospital-based breastfeeding initiatives are associated with decreased rates of infant deaths in the first six days after birth, dispelling speculation that such practices might increase infant death. Lori Feldman-Winter, MD, MPH, a member of the staff at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Health Care and professor of pediatrics at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, was a co-author of the study. 1,000 Turkeys Were Distributed Through Network of Community Organizations

On Saturday, November 23, 2019, Cooper University Health Care kicked-off the holiday season by donating 1,000 turkeys to community groups, faith-based organizations, and the South Jersey Food Bank to benefit Camden residents. The turkeys were provided to a wide network of community groups for distribution to residents in need in time for Thanksgiving. On Thursday, November 7, 2019, Cooper Senior Security Officer Phil Kenerley was recognized by the Freeholders of Camden County during the 18th Annual Veterans Medal Award Ceremony for his service to our country. In addition to Phil, 18 other veterans from the Army, Navy, and Air Force were recognized during the ceremony, which was attended by family and friends.

National “storytelling” expert Thor Ringler, MFA, MS, provided an inspiring Veterans Day program for physicians, medical students, and other health care providers. Ringler has run the My Life, My Story program at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, since 2013. In that time the program has recorded life stories of more than 2,000 veterans — and placed the short biographies in each vets’ electronic medical record. Read more.

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, leaders from Cooper University Health Care held a first-ever Advanced Practice Provider Symposium for area advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, registered nurses, nurse educators and other medical professionals. Attendees spent a full day networking while learning from experts in areas of surgery, oncology, pharmacology, pediatrics, infectious disease and cardiovascular care. Helen’s Angels – a local non-profit organization, which provides support and assistance to individuals and families throughout the region who have been impacted by and/or are recovering from breast cancer, hosted their annual Tinis for Tatas event at the Vue on 50 in Philadelphia. The event featured a live auction, basket raffles, delicious cocktails, and fabulous food.  At the event, Missy Quinn, President and Founder of Helen’s Angels, presented Robert Somer, MD, Head of the Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, with a check for $25K to help provide direct support for MD Anderson at Cooper patients with breast cancer who may need financial assistance to help defray the costs associated with their diagnosis and treatment including co-pays, transportation to and from doctors’ appointments and treatments, and other support services such as house cleaning, child care, meals, wigs and counseling. On Saturday, October 26, the Cooper Pediatric Radiology team participated in a “Feed My Starving Children (FMSC)” Mobile Pack Event at the NJ Army National Guard Center in Haddonfield. Feed My Starving Children® is a non-profit organization providing children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. FMSC meals have reached nearly 70 countries around the world and has packed over 1.6 million meals, which is enough food to feed 4,384 kids every day for a year. Read more.
