Cooper University Health Care Offers to Send Medical Personnel and Supplies to Hurricane Ravaged Puerto Rico

Cooper Chairman George E. Norcross, III and family will donate private transportation costs

Cooper University Health Care is working with federal government agencies and has offered to send a team of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals as well as needed supplies to help the people of Puerto Rico, who have been devastated by Hurricane Maria. George E. Norcross, III Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Cooper, and his family have offered to underwrite the estimated $100,000 cost of transportation to Puerto Rico for the Cooper medical support team and supplies. “Stop the Bleed” Training Offered at Cooper

Would you know how to “Stop the Bleed” if your loved one had a deep laceration causing severe bleeding?

The Cooper University Health Care Department of Trauma is offering free “Stop the Bleed” training as part of a national initiative aimed at putting knowledge gained by first responders and the military into the hands of the public to help save lives during times of disaster. Read more.

Dr. Michael Sabia Shares Opioid Alternatives at Addiction Taskforce Meeting

The Camden County Freeholder Board formed an Opiate and Heroin Addiction Awareness Task Force in 2014 with a mission to increase awareness among county residents of heroin and prescription drug abuse and the devastating effects on the community.

On Tuesday, September 26, 2017, Cooper’s Dr. Michael Sabia, Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli, and Dr. Matthew Salzman attended a meeting of the Taskforce to discuss alternatives to opioids for the treatment of pain. Read more.

Cooper EMS raises money for local charities in Camden

Cooper Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has been responding to 911 calls for medical assistance and injury in Camden, New Jersey, since 2016. The EMTs and Paramedics, through their own innate urge to help and fulfill the Cooper University Health Care mission statement, began participating in the efforts of groups such as The Cooper Foundation to help provide meals, coats, school backpacks, and other essential items for the most needy residents. Colonoscopies Save Lives

Colorectal cancer almost always develops from abnormal growths (polyps) in the colon or rectum. A colonoscopy can find polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Colonoscopy also can find colorectal cancer early, when treatment works best.

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and the American Cancer Society recommend that average-risk men and women begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 50. Read more.

Freeholders institute initiative to fight public health crisis

The Freeholder Board, local law enforcement and healthcare providers announced a new effort to increase public use and visibility of prescription drug drop boxes to combat the opioid crisis. The Camden County Addiction Awareness Task Force made it a point to install standard drop boxes located in police departments throughout the county in 2015. Now, new, mobile drop boxes located in county vehicles will begin to be deployed to events throughout the county this year. Read more.

MD Anderson Cooper Program Helps Men Learn More About Screening and Prevention

On Thursday, September 14, 2017,  MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper’s Cancer Outreach and Screening program hosted a community education program for South Jersey men at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ, on the importance of cancer screenings and prevention, and stroke prevention.

In addition to the physician experts, Ike Reese, SportsRadio 94WIP host and former Philadelphia Eagle, spoke about how men need to make their health and well-being a priority and his personal experience with cancer screening. Read more.

Books and More Books: Teen Makes Special Delivery to Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper

In February 2017, 13-year-old Charlotte Olson donated more than 1,300 books to Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper’s outpatient office in Voorhees for the Reach Out and Read program at Cooper. On September 7, Charlotte made a return visit to the office with a donation of several hundred more books towards her goal of collecting an additional 2,000 for the program.   Read more.
