To help the community prevent the spread of COVID-19, Cooper University Health Care will provide 200,000 non-medical grade KN95 masks to be distributed throughout Camden with the assistance of the Camden County Metro Police and Sheriff’s Departments.
The masks are not appropriate for clinical settings in hospitals and were purchased early in the pandemic when there was a significant shortage of all types of masks. Read more.
Cooper University Health Care has launched a new Section of Endocrine Surgery, and has appointed distinguished endocrine specialist Lisa Reid, MD, as the inaugural section head of the department.
The new Section of Endocrine Surgery will provide specialized treatment for patients with a wide range of endocrine diseases including diabetes, Cushing’s syndrome, Grave’s disease, goiters, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and adrenal and thyroid cancers among other conditions. Read more.
Cooper University Health Care is the first hospital in New Jersey to offer the Siemens SOMATOM, the latest generation of portable CT scanners.
Portable CT scanners allow critically ill or medically fragile patients to receive a CT scan without having to leave the bedside or be moved.

The Department of Pathology at Cooper University Health Care has added the Genexus Integrated Sequencer, a new, fully automated, next-generation rapid gene sequencing technology to its diagnostic resources. Gene sequencing allows physicians and scientists to identify and understand the genetic profiles of many viruses, tumors, and other specimens.
Cooper is one of a very few health systems in New Jersey that is able to perform next generation gene sequencing on site. Read more.
Divas For A Cure, a non-profit group of female motorcycle enthusiasts, visited MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper on Dec. 10 to present a check for $2,700, the proceeds of their annual fundraising efforts. Since the group’s inception, it has donated more than $150,000 to the cancer center. Read more.
Camden Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez, representatives from Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 218, and the family of Officer Matthew Sviben visited MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper recently to present a check for $9,000 in honor of Officer Sviben. Officer Sviben died in September at the age of 26 after being diagnosed with Stage IV colorectal cancer in January 2020, just days after he graduated from the police academy and joined the Camden County Police Department. Cooper University Health Care’s Critical Care team will receive two national awards from the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) for their outstanding efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two awards – The Family-Centered Care Innovation Award and the 2022 ICU Heroes Award – will be presented at the 51st SCCM Critical Care Congress in February.

On Monday, December 13, Vincent Zoppina joined his radiation oncologist, Gregory J. Kubicek, MD, on the Philadelphia side of the Ben Franklin Bridge to make the 2.5 mile trip to MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper in Camden for his last treatment for esophageal cancer. The trip was Vince’s idea to celebrate completing five weeks of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation therapy. Read more.
