Andrea M. Russo, MD, a cardiologist and director of electrophysiology and arrhythmia services at Cooper University Health Care, was one of the lead investigators in a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine which examined the ability of smartwatches to detect atrial fibrillation in users. Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib, is an irregular heartbeat that, without treatment, increases a person’s risk of stroke. Read more.

The Cooper Community Heath team was back on the Fire Department circuit again last night visiting the Medford Fire Department in Medford, NJ. First responders received screenings for skin cancer and blood pressure, and were educated about cardiac conditions, prostate, lung and colorectal cancers.

On Wednesday, December 4, 2019, Cooper’s Community Health team partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to educate patients at Cooper Internal Medicine & Specialty Care at JFK offices in Willingboro, NJ. The purpose of the outreach event was to improve the health and wellness of the community by educating patients on the importance of heart health through the reduction of cardiovascular risk factors. A new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows increased rates of implementation of hospital-based breastfeeding initiatives are associated with decreased rates of infant deaths in the first six days after birth, dispelling speculation that such practices might increase infant death. Lori Feldman-Winter, MD, MPH, a member of the staff at Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Health Care and professor of pediatrics at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, was a co-author of the study.
