World Pancreatic Cancer Day

According to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database, there will be an estimated 53,670 new pancreatic cancer cases this year in the U.S. While many patients still die from this disease, this proportion of patients has been stable for the last ten years, suggesting progress is being made in battling this challenging type of cancer.

“Pancreatic cancer and cancers of the liver and bile ducts are complicated and difficult to manage,” says Frank Spitz, MD, Hepatobiliary Surgeon and Deputy Director of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper. Read more.

Veterans Day was celebrated a few days early as Cooper University Health Care recognized employees and physicians for their military service at a special event in their honor on November 8, 2017.

First Responders Invited to Free Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Program

Cooper University Health Care’s Helping Our Heroes program invites all area first responders (police, fire, emergency medical services personnel) to a free cancer and cardiovascular disease awareness and prevention program on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Winslow Township Fire Department, 9 Cedar Brook Road, Sicklerville, NJ.

Presented by a panel of physicians from MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and the Cooper Heart Institute, the program will cover topics including the importance of routine lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer screenings; reducing cardiac risks among first responders; and protecting lungs from occupational hazards. In honor of 2017 Healthcare Quality Week in late October, Cooper University Health Care sponsored the third annual Quality and Patient Safety Awards to recognize the numerous innovative efforts geared toward improving care and creating a safe environment for patients and staff. The winners were selected by a committee of Cooper employees who evaluated the programs on a number of metrics, including high-quality clinical outcomes achieved, improved patient safety, sustainability, and measurable results. Emergency First Responders – Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Awareness and Prevention

Join MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and Cooper Heart Institute experts for a panel discussion focusing on cancer prevention and screening and cardiac health.

Cooper Program Promotes Anti-Bullying Message in Advance of Nationwide Movie Release

On November 17, 2017, WONDER, a major motion picture based on the New York Times bestseller by R.J. Palacio of the same name, will be released in theaters nationwide. WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters a mainstream elementary school for the first time. The overall theme of the book and movie is acceptance of others despite differences and the importance of choosing kindness. Read more.

Adventure Aquarium Mermaids Visit Children’s Regional Hospital

Miram and Echo, mermaids from Camden’s Adventure Aquarium, stopped by the outpatient office of Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper on November 2, 2017. The mermaid pair enjoyed a meet and greet with young patients, their families, and staff, as well as read some underwater-themed books to the young patients.

The Camden Higher Education and Healthcare Task Force released market research that demonstrates demand exists for new and refurbished housing convenient to Camden workplaces and schools among the Task Force’s nine anchor institutions’ employees, medical professionals, and students. The survey of the employees and students of nine major employers and schools in the City of Camden was conducted this summer. Read more.
